Hey, in case you're wondering who this random person is who's friending you... I stumbled across you via moonvoice's LJ and thought you seemed nifty. Plus you're a Denverite, and I'm moving to Denver (along with nadjarachel and gaarik) in June! :D Interesting animal-people in places I'm moving to = always good.
I'm a Kemetic/pagan hawk-person, currently in Ohio. More on my LJ if you're curious.
Well-met! I've actually perused your LJ before, which is why your username looked so familiar when I saw the little "hey you've got friends" notification. *grin* It's awesome that you're moving out here in the summer - Colorado is a beautiful, wonderful place to be. I'm betting you'll love it. What brings you out here, anyways?
I friended you and nadjarachel back, and will check out gaarik when I'm off work. :D
By the way, you might wanna look up lynxspirit - she is also an animal person in Denver! (Boulder, technically, but hey, close enough. She and I are only thirty minutes away from each other.)
Lots of things. *grin* Mountains, for one, because I've been craving them. Plus Denver's got a better economy and job market than Cleveland (Ohio's economy, especially northeast Ohio's, is horrific). It doesn't have as strict of regulations for psychology licensure (according to a couple of my psychology professors, Ohio has the strictest regulations in the country, and they're to the point of ridiculous). The year-round sunlight is also a plus; I can deal with cold and snow if there's sunlight (Ohio has four to six months of gray-gray-gray, and I get seasonal affective pretty bad).
Plus I know someone down there already (sable_twilight), and gaarik knows a couple people as well. And everyone I know who's ever been to or lived in Colorado (especially Denver or Boulder) has utterly loved it. And I used to go skiing in southern Colorado every winter when I lived in Texas. And there are several universities there that offer clinical psychology, and there's Naropa University in Boulder which offers transpersonal psychology, which is something I want to get into at some point down the road.
And land is cheap, and the geography is beautiful, and I hear Denver has a thriving GLBT community and arts community and is rather diverse.
Lots and lots of reasons. :)
I'm familiar with lynxspirit. We had some philosophical differences and differences in approaches to some social matters that were serious enough to stop reading each other on LJ, unfortunately. Nothing personal, just different enough perspectives that we clash a bit.
I imagine NE Ohio's job market is similar to West Virginia's... which is where I'm from. So yeah, I have a good idea of what you mean. ^_^ Denver -does- have a great job market with lots of diversity and opportunity, and it does have 300+ days of sunlight, and ohhh the mountains are lovely. (I live in Golden, in the foothills of the mountains. =3) I think Denver has a thriving GLBT community, but I haven't encountered more than a few members of it so far (yet!).
I would disagree with the "land is cheap" statement; a five-bedroom, three-bathroom house with a two-story, two-car garage on an acre of land went for 100k in West Virginia, whereas the same thing here is upwards of 600k, depending on exact location. The real estate market is pretty crappy at the moment, actually, though it's slightly better for buyers than sellers house-price-wise, but it's getting real damn tough to get financed... (I used to work with Realtors.) Anyways, it'll pick up eventually. [/ramble]
I don't know about similar to West Virginia's, but I know it's only marginally better than Michigan's, which is somehow one of the worst in the country right now. NE Ohio's got that problem of having once been dependant upon steel... and when the steel boom ended, northeast Ohio (especially Cleveland) went to shit. It's never fully recovered, and now it's going through another depression - a big company or two left, and with them went jobs.
And I said land is cheap - not real estate! *grin* I'm talking undeveloped land. It's not something I'm looking at anytime soon, but definitely a long-term eventuality/dream.
I look forward to getting to know you too, especially now that aloiis has said you're neat people. :>
Welcome! I'm Kusani - a lioness-woman, an animistic pagan, and a newly-published novelist. You'll find the whole spectrum spattered here: entries range from deep-thinking philosophy and spirituality, to self-analysis, to the random events of my life, to silly things like memes and quizzes. I also post most of my creative writing here (unlocked), some icons, and some artwork.

It's a good feeling, eh?
Once the incredible WHOOSHOMGSOBUSY of the holidays fades to the ZOMGI'MONVACATIONINWESTVIRGINIA, I'm sure I'll enjoy it more.
Plus, I'm looking forward to the point where I have a real, solid, genuine, paperback copy of Jubagh in my hand. I think I'll flip a shit. :D
Proud of ya!
