The scent of wolf was slowly fading from her hands, and her dagger had long since been cleaned of blood.
She'd thrown it into rock to drive away the red smears.
Akisan'ti knelt atop one of the high, thin mesas of Thousand Needles and turned her moist face up to the glowing crescent moon as though the silver light could wash away the pain. It was so silent, so high up, or so most said - but she heard everything. The old ropes twisted as the chill winds touched them and tossed the weathered planks of the precarious bridges back and forth; far below, hyenas howled and shrieked, and centaur hooves pounded the rock as the invaders galloped from one stronghold to the other. The steady thud of tauren guards stomping their patrols from mesa to mesa, across the seemingly fragile rope bridges, was a drumbeat steadier than her own heart.
And there was the whir of relentless wings right next to her, the scent of musky reptile and sleek feathers. The Shadowprey outrunner wished that there was silence in her solitude, but there was none. The wind serpent at her flank was a cold presence, a weight on her soul where she had forced the hunter-beast bond onto it. It was white and pale violet-silver, breathtakingly beautiful in its lithe grace... and she could feel the blood rage boiling just beneath that pretty hide, behind those slitted eyes.
Spawn of Hakkar. Hakkar, the Blood God of madness and hatred.
Aki traded whispers with Hukari through her hearthstone, clutched too tightly in one hand and pressed close to her lips. When she faltered, he caught it - she wore no mask to hide how she was feeling.
'Hon'nah is dead,' she confessed to the witch doctor half a world away, and she felt tears well up again as she spoke those words. The white snake at her side was silent and sneering, a cold stab of ice against a vulnerable flank, and yet it was close and did not distance itself from her in arrogance or dislike. A paradox, and a deadly one.
Did you eat it? came the trollish question, and she negated Hukari's query swiftly. She had burned Hon'nah's remains in a funeral pyre. The massive, ash-furred dire wolf had looked like she was only sleeping ... but for the gaping, red-rimmed gash across her throat.
Oh, how the blood had poured and poured. The wolf had collapsed then with a strangled whine, bronzed gaze lifting to lock upon her hunter's face as her eyes glazed over. The blood had flowed down the rocky slope and washed around Aki's bare feet and stained her knees crimson as she knelt. The smear had taken her an hour of scrubbing to wash away, both from her own skin and from Hon'nah's pale fur.
The outrunner fell silent for a long moment, eyes squeezed shut, ears deaf to the wingbeats so close. The blood... the feel of it slicking down the dagger's blade, over the guard, onto her bare hands, dripping off her elbows. Trickling past knees and feet, down towards the path that would lead back to Splintertree Post. And the wolf watched her until the spark of life in those beautiful eyes was extinguished for the last time.
Akisan'ti jerked to her feet, hot tears streaking down her cheeks and blurring her vision. It had to be done, she told herself as she whirled on the white snake. It watched her with cold eyes and a forked-tongued smirk.
She began walking again, and though she'd washed her hands a dozen times, she could still feel her wolf's blood staining them.
She'd thrown it into rock to drive away the red smears.

Akisan'ti staggered back into the Crossroads Inn--or, at least, she wanted to stagger. But as the strangers rushed past her and the dry wind brought unfamiliar scents to her nose, she moved gracefully with the cocky swagger all troll women seemed to possess. It took all of her willpower not to lunge at the nearest open cot with clean blankets; instead, she spoke with the innkeeper, unloading her packs and receiving a few small coins for what oddities she'd looted from the bodies of her kills. Zhevra horns and raptor claws brought just enough coppers to keep her packs loaded with meat for her pet, water for herself, and arrows for her bow.
The young hunter slowly turned then, feeling less weight dragging at her belt after selling most of what she carried, and made her way through the torch-lit common room to stake out a bed in the back. She whistled softly between slender, sharp-tipped tusks as she sat down and began unstrapping her 'boots'--trollish shin guards, really--and shrugging out of the leather harness that functioned as poor armor. At the call, a massive dire wolf trotted into the room, heedless of the startled gasps its appearance caused, and joined her as she laid her hunting gear aside.
"Hon'nah," Aki smiled wearily at the ash-furred beast, reaching out a hand that ached from nocking innumerable arrows to a bowstring to rest her palm on the wolf's brow. The worg gazed at her with deep yellow eyes and seemed to smile in return. "Le' us res' 'ere..." the hunter murmured in heavily accented orcish, laying herself carefully on the hard mattress and pulling the thin blanket up to her shoulders. She shivered once, convulsively, as she cradled her head on one bent arm and stared blankly at the nearby bustle in the inn. It was always so hard to sleep here, so noisy and active...
The dire wolf moved with a rustle of dense fur, and abruptly the bed creaked as Hon'nah put her weight on the mattress and frame. Akisan'ti jumped at the sudden slope of her bed as the white-grey lupine settled next to her, a reassuring warmth and strength just at her back. Feeling more comforted than she'd care to admit to any but her beast, the troll rolled over and threw one arm over the wolf's thick neck, tucking her lanky frame close to the huge worg securely. 'Thank you,' she murmured silently in Troll, mouthing the words against the travel-dusted fur.
Hon'nah rumbled in her chest and rested her heavy jaws on Aki's head protectively, yellow eyes watching every moment in the room. So surrounded by the beast she had hunted--the beast that had chosen her--the Shadowprey woman slowly drifted off to sleep.
