A little like dying, went the thought process. Drowning in experience. It couldn't be any other way, if one had no skin.

Human faces get old and wizened with age, hair dying into a grey shag, wrinkles condensing around their eyes and mouths. Wolf faces don't. Wolf fur greys a little bit, but most wolves are dead before their pelts die. The oldest have silvered muzzles and scars putting fake wrinkles in the waning gloss of their fur. They die in battle or in the hunt before age has gotten enough of a grip to put fog over their yellow eyes - long before time has stiffened their bones or beset their minds with cobwebs.

This wolf was so old that he moved stiffly, like an old human, and that his once-black fur had almost all gone lifelessly grey. His gold eyes were hazed with too many years, but the mind behind them showed no slowing of wit.

"'Ware the beast, boy," he croaked, lifting a handpaw to settle the withered thing on my shoulder. His knuckles were large and twisted, the blunt claws tipping his digits cracked and flaking. His muzzle was inches from my face, but I couldn't recoil from the musk of death long cheated - the scent clung to his breath. "'Ware it, an' it won't kill ye... don't hunt it, an' it won't hunt ye..."

He paused, looked me straight in the eye, and then his colorless muzzle twisted into a yellow-toothed grin. With his other handpaw, he pressed a fine stone spearhead into my lax hands. "...but ye can't ne'er stop hunting. The hunt is Death, lookin' ye in the face every time."

I knew the words now, knew what he was getting at, and I mouthed along with him as he wheezed, "...but the hunt is life itself, too."

The wolf realized I'd lip-synched his words, and he smiled crookedly again. One fang was missing. "Then ye know, boy, that I'm already dead."

I nodded soberly. He gave my shoulder a weak push, his elbow popping audibly. "Go hunt, boy." The smile had faded from his face. "Go live."

Summary and Notes-- Just because. This may well end up being a novel, since I've been chewing on this concept for a few hours, and the world itself for years now. Also - enjoy the subtle mockery. =D I stole a little of guitarbluesman's sense of humor/witticism. <3!

It had e'er been a small pack. Over four or five years, a loner had collected followers ... slowly. Slowly.

Until it became a pack of four, and it could be called a family. A family bound tightly by experience and time, by love and trust. The loner, the "alpha," provided for the other three who could not live as loners. It was a crippled pack, this, but a pack nonetheless.

The oldest was a deep grey wolf who had lost an eye and half a paw in a battle long ago 'gainst a bear. She was newest, still adjusting to the other three, but instantly loyal to the alpha. And she was wise in a way the other two were not, the other two who had been adopted into the makeshift family when they were but pups.

The oldest was Greyface, and in the alpha's long and frequent absences to hunt for the pack, she had begun taking leadership. When the alpha was gone for days at a time, she soothed the younger two and made sure they stayed safe. She would forage in the bones and the roots around the den to take the bite off their raging hunger.

The alpha came back one night exhausted, and slept for a full day. No prey was brought home. The younger ones, a rust-furred called Brighteye and a paler, cream-furred called Curltail, sniffed at their sleeping leader and whined for the hunger in their bellies.

Greyface saw, and sighed, and knew where the alpha's last kill had been buried, bones and dregs all. Nothing fit for a healthy wolf to eat, but if there was no food, then health would be a thing of the past very shortly. So she rose and walked over to the youths - Brighteye just a yearling, and Curltail barely older - and scruffed one. Brighteye yelped, but even that noise did not wake the alpha, as Greyface dragged her outside the den.

The two followed the elder as she trekked a short distance away and began digging. While the alpha slept, they ravaged the few remains of a good-sized kill that even the hungry pack hadn't been able to eat in its entirety some days ago. Brighteye was curled up against Greyface's flank, snoozing her meal off, and Curltail investigating the brush, when the alpha stepped out. This kill, these leftovers, had become the alpha's personal store.

Greyface looked up into the white muzzle and the lack of bared teeth, then bowed her head. The alpha was not angry - there was no smell of rage on the hot winds of summer. Only resigned, somewhere between disappointment and apology, that she had failed the pack.

In silence, the alpha led the other three back to the den, a silent promise in golden eyes to do better on the next hunt.

Rating and Warnings-- PG for light violence and nudity.
Species and Characters-- Species = Denaith werewolves & humans. Chars = Crafe Inno, an experienced wolf hunter, Jiya, a lone wolf, and Keghan, another lone wolf.
Summary and Notes-- I started writing this as a totally random, unplanned novel set in Denaith... it never went far, but I liked what I got out of it. This is just the short prologue and the first chapter.

Scene: The year is 2015. Sushi has published a handful of fiction novels, including Demon Wolves, Lone Wolves, and White Wolf. The first stars a half-demon wolf, half-earth demon woman named Ranayin and is set in Cadora; the second stars a female werewolf named Fakhi and is set in Denaith; the third stars a female Wolf Shifter named Sachi and is set in Alasa-Ca.

[All three wolves walk onto the set in human form.]

Fakhi: ...
Ranayan: What the hell? Who are you two?
Sachi: Sachi, white Wolf. You?
Fakhi: Fakhi, lone wolf.
Ranayan: Ranayan, hybrid wolf and total bitch.
Sachi: I feel like I've been cloned.
Ranayan: Who the hell says _you_ were the original? *snark snark*
Fakhi: *rolls eyes at them both and turns to leave*
Sachi: Hey, wait a sec. We all have wolf forms, right? Let's shift. I wanna see something.
Ranayan: *muttering* Ten to one we're all white.
Sachi: Shut up and shift. *shifts to a huge, muscular, long-legged, gold-eyed white Wolf easily six feet at the shoulder*
Fakhi: *removes her clothing shamelessly, ignores the sudden uneasiness of the other two, kneels, and breaks her entire body only to reform it as a yellow-eyed wolf--she stands about three feet high, skinny but healthy, dwarfed by Sachi*
Sachi: *grins ferally*
Fakhi: **expressionless**
Ranayan: *transforms in a static-y whirl of brown and green energy into a wolf built like Fakhi with wild white fur, blazing gold eyes, and the same ginsu-knife claws as Sachi has--seven feet tall, she smirks down at Sachi*
Sachi: *scowls*
Fakhi: **expressionless**
Ranayan: All white. Gold eyes. You and I, *nods to Sachi,* have massive claws that belong to some big bear or feline...
Sachi: *continues* All female, all obviously warriors, all Shifters of some sort...
Fakhi: *continues* All bad-ass muthafuckas...
Sachi & Ranayan: =O_O=
Fakhi: What? I'm a lone wolf. Do you expect me to be polite when most of my meals consist of human refuse?
Sachi: ...no.
Ranayan: *laughs*
Sachi: So, do you think that her readers will ever figure out that we're actually all clones?
Ranayan: Get off your high horse, bitch. You're not the original.
Sachi: *snarl*
Fakhi: Actually, she's right. None of us are the original.
Ranayan: WTF? Then who the hell is?
Fakhi: She is.
Sachi & Ranayan: =O_o;=
Sachi: So, you mean that all the other books she might write with wolves in it will have another clone?
Fakhi: Probably.
Ranayan: Holy shit. In a few more years, this might be a friggin' white wolf _convention_!
Fakhi: -_-; ... I'm leaving now. *begins walking away*
Sachi & Ranayan: *exchange glances, shrug*
Sachi: *shifts back to human form* Me too. Nice meeting you... er, myself... er... guh. *teleports out*
Ranayan: Well, that was odd. *transforms into a human, then lets the earth envelop her to tunnel back to Cadora*
Fakhi: *continues walking alllll the way back to Denaith*

On my day off, I figured I'd better get around to writing some of the stuff I owe for folks. And yeah, this was meant to be a Yule/Christmas pressie. Sowwy. -_-;;
